JAY Z GOES ARTY FOR PICASSO BABY VIDEO IN NYC

tumblr_mpsll7eCmU1qe9qato1_1280 Performance ART. Man, I can’t tell you when it happened but I really love Jay Z. When it came to the Jay/Kanye debate recently I took on both albums and warmed up considerably to the former. For his video for Picasso, Jay Z invited a full house of writers, spoken poets, artists, painters, actors, fans and media to partake in his performance.

Set in a large room at Milk Studios in NYC. Inspired by Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist Is Present” exhibit, select people take turns facing off with Jay as he raps to “Picasso Baby”. Cameos include actor Alan Cumming, Fab Five Freddy, Judd Apatow and several members from the cast of “Girls” like Jemima Kirke and Adam Driver.  Rapper Wale, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and actress Rosie Perez were also among the invited. I have great respect for Jay Z, especially since he pulled this off. You take someone who rose to fame in the 90s as a hip hop artist and he brings himself to the future so seamlessly. Modern in every way without the boring ego. Take a look below.

MUST SEE: WOODKID – I LOVE YOU

At a dinner party this weekend we were talking about the relationship of fashion and music and as we started sharing some of our favorites, my good friend Colin introduced me to WoodKid. I had never heard of this name before so, as you can imagine, he pulled out his Macbook to show us. This was the video he showed us, entitled I Love You. The man in the video is not WoodKid. Actually you may recognize him from his work with Dior Homme. The video was styled by Kris Van Assche, the Belgian designer with looks from his own collection. This mind-blowing masterpiece of cinematography was directed by Yoann Lemoine (which is insane because he is WoodKid) and stars model Matvey Lykov as the protagonist, about the man who died twice, according to the translation from Ssense.

I Love You isn’t Woodkid’s first gig as director; the indie musician is actually a noted music video director, having worked with Lana Del Rey, among others. Van Assche’s Fall 2013 collection for Dior Homme was oddly enough inspired by Woodkid’s Iron which appeared on the runway soundtrack too. His video’s are unbelievable and I urge you to spend some time today watching them. The Agyness Deyn video is pretty amazing toon.

ROMEO BECKHAM FOR BURBERRY

You know, I’m not going to lie, some things are just not fair. This kid, who is 10 years old, is the face of Burberry’s latest campaign. While he is silly and sweetly gap-toothed now, you can see the resemblance to his father playing a mighty role in his life. Bugger. Still, we are very happy to see Burberry getting a bit cheeky. The video features Edie Campbell and Charlie France in mannequin-like poses while Romeo runs around being silly. It’s quite charming. Take a look below.

MUST SEE: ANDRÉ – A SHORT FILM

It’s a total re-blog but I had to share this with you. It is a short film that follows our hero André, a struggling young model in Cape Town trying to make it in the industry while contemplating life. It is one hell of a LOL-fest if you have ever lived in Cape Town. I feel like I know him, which makes his whole situation a little bit sadder to watch. Poor guy. It’s a bit long but actually well worth it if you can appreciate this kind of humor by Ari Kruger and Daniel Zimbler (who stars as André). The film appears to be three years old but it is still pretty funny.

FORM: REYNIER SHIELDS FOR MAN OF THE CLOTH BY STEVE MARAIS/COLIN O’ MARA DAVIS

I once again reunite with photographer Steve Marais for a project entitled Form. The short video that accompanies the shoot was filmed and directed by Colin O’ Mara Davis. For styling I placed Boss model Reynier Shields in Stiaan Louw from the Atletiek series (this includes the famous leather jock strap), with pieces from peepingtom.co.za, Mr. Price and Loom.

We shot this at a remarkable abandoned swimming pool in Kensington, Jhb. The photo series will be released later today.

MUST SEE: A CONVERSATION WITH HIMSELF, STIAAN LOUW ON SKATTIE TV

Stiaan on Stiaan, this was the case with the Skattie What Are You Wearing segment featuring Stiaan Louw. He discusses the challenges of the local fashion industry quite honestly while touching on his view on the new male masculine ideal. I like the TV concept coming from Malibongwe and Sandiso, asking the real questions. Keep it up, boys.

MUST SEE: BRIDE OF ZION FEATURING THE FROWN

I am surrounded by very talented people here in Johannesburg and count myself very lucky to call these folks my friends. Jessica Rayne of Rayne called upon Steve Marais and JP Hanekom to shoot this spectacular short film which features The Frown’s lead singer Eve. Edited by Colin ‘O Mara Davis, the film presents a visual feast that borders on disturbing and beautiful all at once. Using a range of Rayne product it was styled by Jessica Lupton with make-up by Maria De Vos. Try and tell me we aren’t a talented country! I certainly won’t expect less from local musicians when delivering new video’s…
